Facts Behind Treatment with Scorpion Poison

After briefly mentioned by President Joko Widodo some time ago in a speech, scorpion poison is now a warm conversation. This is not without reason, poison venom does have many benefits in the world of medicine. What are the benefits of scorpion venom?
Scorpions are poisonous arthropods whose habitats are scattered throughout the world, except Antarctica. This arthropod is feared because its toxins can cause various health problems, even death.

Scorpion venom is a mixture of various peptides including several enzymes such as hyaluronidases, phospholipases, sphinhhomyelinases and proteolytic enzymes. The use of scorpion toxins for health has been used by some people in various countries, including in Asia.

Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are found in scorpion venom and in fact store many health benefits. These AMPs compounds have good benefits in eradicating bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

In fact, one of the benefits of this scorpion toxin is contributing to HIV infection. However, these benefits are still being investigated, so treatment using scorpion venom has not been widely used.

Various benefits of scorpion venom

Scorpion venoms save a lot of benefits in the field of medicine. What are the benefits?

1. As an antiinfection agent

One of the benefits of scorpion venom is in eradicating various types of bacterial infections. In fact, the potential of these scorpion venom can be found in various infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses and parasites.

One of the potential benefits of scorpion venom is as a treatment herb for HIV infection. Until now there is no vaccine against HIV infection, whereas scorpion toxins show potential anti-HIV. This provides a glimmer of hope in the battle against HIV infection.

2. Beneficial in the treatment of blood disorders

Scorpion venom contains peptides and proteins that play a role in blood clotting. Some compounds found in scorpion venom can inhibit blood clotting. With these findings, scorpion venoms have the potential to be used in the treatment of various diseases due to blockage of blood vessels, such as heart attacks, and strokes.

3. Beneficial for cancer treatment

Another benefit of scorpion venom is its antitumor potential. Scorpion venom has potential in handling various malignancies such as neruoblastoma, leukemia and brain cancer.

This scorpion venom contains compounds of venom component III (SVC III) scorpion that selectively binds to leukemia cells and modulates NF-kB which plays an important role in the development of blood cells.

4. Beneficial for antinyeri drugs

Scorpion venom is also useful in reducing pain and potentially used as an antinyeri drug. Toxins in scorpion venom can interact with the sodium channel in the central nervous system and muscles.

This sodium channel plays a role in delivering pain signals on the nerves. Thus further modification of this compound is expected to give birth to a new antinyeri drug.

Despite its wide potential, the scorpion toxicity benefits are still limited to the research phase and require further examination before it can be widely used. Of course the issue mentioned by President Jokowi is worth our further study. Are you interested in exploring the usefulness of scorpion venom?
